The Process

How IBT Certification Actually Works

Simple enough to explain in one sentence. Rigorous enough to withstand expert scrutiny. Here is every step — nothing hidden.

The One-Sentence Version

IBT contacts your clients, verifies who they are, asks one question, and applies a published statistical formula.

Why This Matters

Every other trust system either relies on self-reported data, allows the business to influence the process, or has no statistical standard for what enough evidence means. IBT fixes all three problems at once.

01
Application — Day 0

You apply. We verify.

Submit your client count, industry class, and average contract value. You provide your full client list and sign a Completeness Declaration — a legal affirmation that the list is complete and honest. IBT cross-references your list against two independent sources: billing records and CRM data. Both must confirm a client relationship before that client is included. Discrepancies greater than 5% or 10 clients trigger a Certification Committee review.

VERIFICATION: Client list × billing records × CRM data → dual-source confirmation required · Omissions audit: 10% random callback · Fraud finding: 24-month reapplication bar
02
Outreach Plan — Days 7–14

We build your randomized sampling plan.

IBT constructs the statistical sampling plan specific to your client count (N). We determine n — the minimum number of verified responses needed — and c — the maximum allowed negatives. The outreach sequence is randomized by IBT. You do not know the order, and you cannot pre-contact clients before we reach them.

SAMPLING PLAN: n = max(hypergeometric result, proportional floor, prior n) · c = hypergeometric acceptance number · Outreach order: randomized, logged, auditable
03
Collection — Days 14–90

Your clients respond. We verify every one.

IBT reaches out via email and SMS using the standardized instrument: one question, three response options. Every respondent undergoes two-layer identity verification — Stripe Identity plus record cross-check — before their answer is counted. The business has zero access to individual responses during this window.

INSTRUMENT: 'Overall, how would you describe your experience with [Business]?' · Options: Positive / Negative / Neutral · Verification: Stripe Identity + record cross-check · Business access: none during collection
04
Decision — Days 90–95

The math decides. Not a person.

At day 90, the evidence window closes. The acceptance sampling model runs automatically. The Certification Committee reviews the report — they verify procedure was followed, but cannot override the mathematical outcome. Pass or fail is determined entirely by your clients' verified responses.

DECISION LOGIC: Backstop gate → Count gate (neg ≤ c) OR Ratio gate (neg/total ≤ 10%) → pass · Both gates fail → fail · Committee role: procedural review only
05
Certification — Day 95+

You earn a Standing. Or you don't.

Passing businesses receive a Standing — Bronze through Platinum — based on the volume of verified positive responses. Higher Standings require both higher satisfaction ratios and more verified positives, proving trust at scale. The certificate is valid for 12 months. Failed businesses receive a full statistical result report.

STANDINGS: Bronze ≥80% ratio, n positives · Silver ≥85%, 1.5n · Gold ≥90%, 2n · Platinum ≥95%, 3n · Certificate valid: 12 months
06
Renewal — Month 11+

Annual re-certification. No shortcuts.

Renewal is a full re-assessment from scratch. No expedited tracks. No legacy standing carryover. N resets to clients served in the 12 months before the new application date. Failed renewals revoke the existing certificate immediately.

RENEWAL: Full re-assessment required · N resets to last 12 months · Apply up to 60 days early → Renewal Pending status · Failed renewal: immediate revocation + 90-day bar
The Survey Instrument

One question.
No interpretation needed.

The IBT survey instrument is standardized across every assessment. It cannot be customized, modified, or administered by the business. The deliberate simplicity is a feature — it eliminates scale interpretation variance and produces a clean outcome suitable for statistical processing.

No rating scales that people interpret differently
No open-text fields that introduce subjectivity
No follow-up questions that prime responses
Neutral responses count as responses only — no negative weight
Standard IBT Survey Instrument
"Overall, how would you describe your experience with [Business Name]?"
PositiveCounts toward Standing
NegativeCounts against c
NeutralResponse only — no weight
Administered by IBT only. Business has no access to individual responses. Survey text is locked at assessment start.
